The name, Boxster, refers to the flat engine, or boxer, that was developed by a German engineer and is used on the Porsche 986. This two seat roadster is sporty looking and is a great handling piece of machinery as well. Even so, there have been some problems with the vehicle as related by the car's owners.
One issue that some owners of the Porsche 986 have complained about concerns the lowering of the car's convertible top. It would seem that when these owners attempt to lower the top, it only closes about two-thirds of the way before becoming stuck. It has been noted in some instances that this problem occurs even as the motor appears to be running despite the cover being stuck.
This problem has been known to occur after the tracks have been cleaned and lubed. This would seem to suggest a problem with the switch that operates the motor. It could be a problem with one of the sensors or series of switches that operate the roof are failing or sending the wrong signals to or from the motor. This can be a very irritating problem for Porsche convertible owners because, after all, what is the point of owning a convertible if it cannot be driven with the top down. That's really the whole point.
If you are having a problem with the top of your convertible not lowering or raising properly, then you should not hesitate to take your Boxster 986 in to be checked out by an authorized German import technician.
